Gaming performance bad on M17x (GTX 680m)

0

I'm having problems with gaming performance and have no idea how to solve it right now. I know this machine should be able to perform better than this and I was hoping for some tips. Hopefully I'll find the problem.

My machine is

  • Alienware m17x R4, Intel i7
  • Graphics card is GTX 680m from nVidia.
  • 24gb RAM.
  • Windows 8 OS.

I am running into problems with a game called StarCraft 2 which shouldn't be too demanding.

The problems I'm having is that during too many animations is running (big fights etc.) the framerate drops from ~25 to ~5 and freezes completely on occasions. When the freeze is over, the game runs really fast for a second until it 'catches up' so to speak. Mostly it just drops framerate until the big fight/animations are over.

Since this is a completely new PC with high performance gfx card, I'm pretty much sure that there shouldn't be any problems like this.

I installed drivers from nVidia, the ones that they recommended. I also installed latest drivers for chipset.

I investigated the possibility that I might be running on the internal gfx card instead of the GTX, and learned that I can switch between them by pressing fn+F7. That did not help, and I could barely run the game.

Graphics card performance

I installed GPU-z as instructed and it gives me some information about the graphics cards.

To set which card should be used for certain programs you can go to the nVidia control panel (Right click desktop -> nVidia control panel -> Manage 3D settings). I have made sure that the game is in this list with proper settings, however this does not solve my problem.

I have logged the sensors from GPU-z and put the log in a gist . During this log I'm playing a game and experiencing lag, FPS down to 3.

Benchmarks

Checking some tests I see a different (better) result than I'm having.

On the following link testing this game they get around 50 FPS on highest settings. I get dips to 10 FPS on lowest setting, when they suggest you get 250 FPS on low settings with this GFX card.

3Dmark benchmark seems to give me OK results: http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/592251

Other games

I have tested one other game (Diablo 3) with maximum video settings and it runs like a charm - very smoothly with high FPS, never dipping below 25 even in huge fights with lots of animations.

Any idea is appreciated.

Make sure the chipset is also up to date, and your sound is up to date. Does the fault only occur with this 1 game or with other games? – Dave – 2013-04-29T08:16:06.833

I have only tried this one game, but I can install something else and see how it goes. I will also checkout chipset and sounds drivers. Thanks. – miphe – 2013-04-29T08:40:38.323

On a side note, maybe this should me moved to Arqade - not sure if it's more software or more gaming related. – miphe – 2013-04-29T13:27:40.993

I don't think so @miphe - http://gaming.stackexchange.com/faq

Did you try another game yet @miphe? – Dave – 2013-04-29T13:34:40.837

2@miphe take a look at GPUz – Sathyajith Bhat – 2013-04-29T15:59:47.083

@Sathya Thanks, that gives me a lot of useful information. The initial problem still applies. This machine should manage a game with lots of action and many opponents, but still in 2vs2 when there's a fight the FPS drops to ~5 and sometimes freezes completely for a couple of seconds. – miphe – 2013-04-29T18:31:45.393

@DaveRook Chipset drivers installed, they are now updated but I'm still having low framerate. I updated the information quite a bit with benchmarks etc. – miphe – 2013-05-02T08:17:54.350

@miphe, but you still didn't (I don't think) state if you tried another game – Dave – 2013-05-02T08:20:31.970

@DaveRook Oh, sorry. Yes I did try Diablo 3. It works quite well with around 25 FPS on highest settings. I have not tried a big fight with lots of animations on Diablo 3, but I will do that. It is my belief so far that it works better in other games than in Starcraft 2. I need to confirm that. – miphe – 2013-05-02T08:56:46.543

Do you feel that the issue is only with Diablo 3? – Dave – 2013-05-02T08:57:19.953

The issue is with Starcraft 2. Possibly with Diablo 3 as well when there's a lot of animations at the same time. I will make some tests on it. – miphe – 2013-05-02T14:45:13.133

@DaveRook I can confirm that in Diablo 3 (which is a newer game than Starcraft 2) I'm never going below 25 FPS, the gaming experience is very nice - no problems what so ever. – miphe – 2013-05-02T17:35:40.730

I would get in touch with Starcraft then and explain this; it seems too local to one game. You should test one more, just to confirm that it just Startcraft which is problematic on your machine. – Dave – 2013-05-02T18:17:30.710

Are there any patches or updates for the game? If so, did you install them all? – Dave – 2013-05-02T18:17:56.210

I did install latest updates yes, there's a check before each load that makes sure you're running the latest version of the game. – miphe – 2013-05-03T07:09:43.420
