I'm using a Dell Studio laptop which has volume up/down hotkeys. On pressing these, I want a volume OSD to popup to show my current volume status just like in OSX; that is, just like:
Anybody know any solution that would work on Arch Linux?

Apparently, people don't read what others say. If you said Linux, that certainly doesn't mean Windows :)
Try this interesting project: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=132218 Volnoti is not so straight forward as those windows candies, but arch linux folks are amazing in terms of help - so, on that forum thread, you'll find all instructions, and configuration scripts that need to be written in order to have this running.
