Most laptop vendors seem to supply relatively cheap MLC drives with their pre-built configurations.
I know that the traditional drill is that a SLC is fast and reliable while a MLC is slower and less reliable; but I've heard that in a last years lots of elaborate algorithms and workarounds made MLC almost as good as SLC. Can anyone show me some definitive modern benchmarks that either prove or dismiss this fact?

Which point of the question is exactly subjective or has too wide scope? I've tried to fit the guidelines. – GreyCat – 2011-10-03T20:37:53.487

GreyCat, I've not voted to close this question as I see it more as a "Is it true that SLC is more reliable (etc) than MLC?" But the main reason that people may vote to close is that it is difficult to quantify which is better, it depends on a lot of unspoken factors such as your personal use of the computer, the OS, what other software and a lot of other factors. Questions should be firmly answerable (I do believe this question could actually have a proper answer) but if you would prefer a discussion it may be worth going to chat.

This questions feels like a shopping recommendation. It's not quite in that category, imo, but it has that smell to it. – Joel Coehoorn – 2011-10-03T20:55:18.407
Okay, this question is not about shopping, especially it's not about shopping for particular brands or products. I'm not asking to find a best notebook or SSD for me. I just want to know the current state of the market, as both search engines and hardware-related sites are littered with "SLC good, MLC bad" articles, which are probably outdated and not true anymore, but they're came on the top in search queries due to their age. I believe that this question is really firmly answerable, probably with a simple link to modern set of reviews of benchmarks that prove one or other option. – GreyCat – 2011-10-03T21:03:46.317
I've changed the introduction of the question - hope it sounds much less shopping-like. – GreyCat – 2011-10-03T21:06:59.263
I've changed the question to the objective core of your problem, the package around it was a bit subjective. – Tamara Wijsman – 2011-10-03T21:18:56.737
2I have voted for reopening. I do not see the question how it now stands as a shopping question. I also do not agree in general with closing questions because there is no clear cut answer -- I think it is absolutely constructive to try to develop a good general discussion of the MLC vs SLC issue. I too see that most explanations of the difference (at least those that rank will in searches) are likely outdated. – jcrawfordor – 2011-10-03T21:34:11.260
I personally would like to see if anyone has seen any reviews on the SLC v MLC reliability debate. – surfasb – 2011-10-04T02:15:36.470
