It's not something I do often, but yesterday I had to pop out unplanned for a while - a little too long to leave the PC sat on or asleep - and wanted to save what I was in the middle of doing by hibernating my machine. But the option isn't there on the start menu:
A quick web-search seems to show that the most common "fix" for this is to disable hybrid sleep.
I don't want to do that as hybrid sleep is a useful feature.
So, is there a way to have the hibernation option available from the normal location on the start menu without disabling hybrid sleep?
I realise I could create a shortcut to do this for me, but I don't need it often and don't want a shortcut somewhere cluttering up my machine for very occasional use. Similarly, I don't see the point in installing any additional software for the same reasons.
1I am concerned about wasting a "tiny" amount of energy - it still wastes money. I like hybrid-sleep because I can have it on a short timer; it protects my session when I'm drawn from the computer suddenly (which is common) but is quick to resume (unlike hibernation). Similarly, I have hibernate on a longer timer for when I don't return quickly. I would also like to trigger it manually for the rare cases when I know in advance it will be a long break, hence the question. As said in my question - additional files are not desirable, it's for rare use and they cause unnecessary clutter. – DMA57361 – 2010-09-15T18:38:03.043
(prob should have read that last line, sorry) If it for very rare use you could just type shutdown -h in the run command(press window key+r) and press ctrl-shift enter – Jeff F. – 2010-09-15T18:48:28.337
2It's still not ideal, but that is a work-around I've used before. I still don't see why someone decided that no one would want to hibernate if hybrid sleep is on, and want to know if there's a way to circumvent that. – DMA57361 – 2010-09-15T18:58:53.163
