using mcedit - pressing the key 'e' prints some arbitrary text

Question

• I ssh to my shared host (linux-x64) via my local terminal app "Konsole".
• I run "mcedit"
• I press 'e'
• The editor is writing some "arbitrary debris" (last text was 12 char long html snippet). The text does not come from the local clipboard (there's other text there), it doesn't come from mcedit's clip file (there's other text there, too).

Anywhere else outside the mcedit program, "e" prints just "e", as it should.

Also, the same mcedit program on my localhost, with the same terminal works fine (i.e. pressing 'e' prints 'e').

How can I troubleshoot this strange problem?

BTW the problem exists for few weeks already.
