How can I tell if my TV will support a video based on its tech description

1

I'm new to this stuff and a bit confused. Based on Samsung's documentation their TVs(I have relatively new 2019 model) support most video and audio formats. Since I know that they work best with H.264, this is what I usually look for. Let's take this example of video I tried:

BDRip 720p Container: MKV Video codec: H.264, 1280x536, (2.40:1), 23.976 fps, 3741 kbps, 0.227 Bits/(Pixel*Frame)

Audio: 48 kHz, AC3 Dolby Digital, 3/2 (L,C,R,l,r) + LFE ch, ~384.00 kbps avg

Audio 2: 48 kHz, DTS, 3/2 (L,C,R,l,r) + LFE ch, ~1509.00 kbps avg

Subtitles: softsub (SRT)

I downloaded several different video files from different sources all in H.264 and with at least one AC3 audio and SRT subtitles. And only one out of 6 so far worked out of the box. I don't get it.

If I convert them using HandBrake using Matroska H.264 preset they all work, but I don't understand what the difference is between the source file and the converted one.

What I also don't understand is why the converted file is so much smaller. If the original file is about 10 Gigs, the converted one can be about 1.5 Gb. How is that possible if I'm leaving the same resolution? Can someone enlighten me?

Not an answer but an easier way is to set up a plex server and use that. My (older) Samsung TV will play some H.264 and no H.265 but if you stream from plex you don't have to bother converting in advance and it will play anything. Perhaps their supported formats page will explain better.

The problem may be related to bitrate. Does your TV's spec give info about the max video and audio bitrate supported? – FedonKadifeli – 2020-02-15T20:07:48.627

1Thanks, @lx07. Of all the stackexchange sites this one looks like the best match. Where should people with similar questions go then? Quora? – yuranos87 – 2020-02-15T21:18:26.490

You could ask in meta. It seems a perfectly reasonable question for this site to me but unfortunately I don't have enough rep to see any detailed close reasons (if there are any) apart from the generic "off-topic".
