how to debug the integration of ibus with libreoffice (redhat 7.6)

Question

I'm running on a RHEL 7 system. I'm trying to get Japanese input to work in libreoffice applications. The input worked fine on the same system for RHEL 6 but I having issues now. When Japanese is selected from the ibus menu it works in the terminal and other applications but for libreoffice in particular it does not input Japanese characters even though the selection is still set to Japanese when I switch to the text editor window. I have the libreoffice-langpack-ja-5.3.6.1-21.el7.x86_64 (all of my other libreoffice packages are 5.3.6.1-21 as well) and ibus-1.5.17-5 installed.

I'm not seeing any errors in any of the /var/log's. The default language in the libreoffice settings is set to Japanese. Not sure where to start with this as I'm not getting any obvious errors anywhere.
