Streaming/Casting stuttering: How to troubleshoot?

0

I have a minor issue that is driving me bonkers. The issue, and my setup, is as follows.

Whenever I'm streaming an NBA game from the official NBA app, from an Android phone or an iPad to a Chromecast, there is a lot of stuttering. Like if the streaming had to cache continuously. This only happens with the NBA and only when casting. Netflix, Spotify, Jellyfin cast perfectly fine. Watching a game on the NBA app, or from a laptop, seems absolutely fine.

My setup consists of the Hub3 provided by Virgin Media, there is a PoE switch, a home server and a Meraki with OpenWRT/LEDE installed (This was my last addition thinking the Wi-Fi signal was the culprit) connected to the router via ethernet. Cat6 if I recall correctly. In the home server I have installed some services. One of them is netdata for monitoring. Netdata is also installed in my laptop.

Netdata networking stack doesn't show any significant packet drops on the laptop or on the server, but I guess they won't show packets travelling from the phone/iPad to the chromecast. The chromecast was replaced recently for a new one too, thinking a 4 year old chromecast was also the culprit.

I used to have Pi-Hole running on a docker container in the server, but also disabled after reading partly the blocklist and partly dnsmasq could also be guilty.

However, I still have the same issue.

What tools can I use to see traffic from phone/ipad to chromecast?

Could I use wireshark somehow to see what is going on?

LinSSID doesn't start in my laptop, but also don't quite fully comprehend wireless signals, strength, etc. Any other similar tool that could help?

OpenWRT is configured automatically to change WiFi channels, is this the best approach?

What monitoring tool is best to have a good/simple overview of the network? I have read things about cacti, librenms, nagios, zabby... but I haven't tried any yet (not enough time to configure at home like if I was at work)

What am I doing wrong?

TLDR; I can't cast NBA games, the stutter is insufferable and can't find a way to solve it.

Apologies for anything that I might be misunderstanding as I'm no networking expert.

Thanks!
