Windows Explorer lagging in different scenarios

0

Recently I noticed that Windows Explorer has started lagging in different situations, which may or may not be linked.

Using Windows 10, version 1903.

Scenario 1 (which I fixed)

When viewing a folder, performing any action such as renaming or creating files would not instantly reflect the changes you make. You needed to manually refresh the folder you are currently in to see the renamed or newly added file.

I fixed this by resetting the folder view settings.

Scenario 2

This is a weird one because you would think it's to do with the browser and not Windows Explorer.

Whenever I am on a website and need to upload a file, the browser hangs for several seconds, even for tiny files. I have tested in both the latest versions of Firefox and Chrome. After doing some research it looks like this is an issue with Windows and not the browsers themselves. Because of Scenario 1 I am suspecting that this is related to some underlying issue with my Windows Explorer.

  • I do not run an Anti-Virus actively. I periodically do manual scans with Malwarebytes. I did a scan today and nothing popped up.
  • I update Windows regularly
  • Now that I think about it, I've noticed a worse performance in file transfers recently, which may be related?
  • The OS is installed on an SSD; currently ~35Gb are free
  • 8Gb RAM
