Using MS Remote Desktop on 2560x1440 res. causes desktop to "shrink" temporarily, thus messing up windows

I'm using MS RDC from a Win10 PC running 2560x1440 to the Win10 PC also running 2560x1440. My RD client is setup to show in full-screen. However, everytime I connect, the resolution on the target PC is as if briefly changed to 1920x1080 - which messes up all the windows that were open to that resolution, then changed back to 2560x1440, but windows remaining resized to the lower resolutions. It's very annoying behavior. Any tips on how to force the full resolution since the beginning? I tried all the obvious settings of RD client, of course.
