Secured Remote RDP accessSecured Remote RDP access

I'm looking to be able to access my main home server remotely, preferably using RDP. This will mainly be from my work laptop to my home server, so anything involving domain based virtual smart cards is out of the question (or domain anything, really).

I'm thinking about checking out Duo, since it appears to have a free license for home use, but I don't know much about it yet. I'm open to other options though.

Thoughts?

Edit: Also, ideally without setting up a VPN. I'm usually VPN'd into one or more client environments already (using VMs), and my laptop can only support so many VMs at one time...

So something like MFA, if possible, would be ideal.

I have a Cisco RV325 VPN router at my home network and I access the home network via IPsec VPN. Works fine. – John – 2019-11-04T01:44:46.877

Please clarify your specific problem or add additional details to highlight exactly what you need. – Ramhound – 2019-11-04T01:48:51.723

Sorry, I should have specified that I'm ideally not looking to setup a VPN. However, since that device is fairly cheap, how complicated is it to set up? I'm a sysadmin, but I'm sorely lacking in my networking knowledge.

That being said, while it's POSSIBLE for me to connect to outside devices with a VPN from my work laptop, I'm almost always already VPN'd into other client environments, and having another VPN going is usually out of the question. – Steve Freeman – 2019-11-04T01:49:55.927

If the other clients use IPsec VPN then one client application can handle it all. Special boxes like some Fortigate boxes can cause conflicts. – John – 2019-11-04T01:52:33.253
