How does a Windows app play sound on a muted HDMI device, and how to prevent it

0

Today, I had a video conference in Microsoft Teams. Since I had sound issues with similar conferences in the past, I connected with my phone for sound and with the Windows 10 app for screen-sharing. I muted the Windows device and disabled the microphone there.

Now here's the problem: I still got sound from Windows. I use a notebook, and the sound came from the internal speakers instead of the default output device, which is a TV connected by HDMI. During the call, I disabled the internal speakers in Windows Settings. Teams switched to the TV to output sound. Then, I pressed the TV's mute button and received visual confirmation that sound was muted, but Teams still played its sound.

How can it do that and how can I prevent it? Some resources to read up on the underlying mechanisms would be great, I have not been able to find anything useful.

1Instead of disabling output devices, you should mute Windows audio (or at least mute Teams in the sound mixer). – I say Reinstate Monica – 2019-10-17T11:40:50.270
