5.25 to NGSFF & standardized PCI-E connectors for HEDT platforms

Later this year I'm going to be doing a major rebuild (not a new computer though most parts will be replaced). A huge part of that is that I'm redoing the entire storage infrastructure. Currently I have three SSDs (C:\ and RAID 1 D:\ for My Documents) and two more RAID 1s (each 4TB mechanical drives). With my 3.5/2.5 adapter (5.25 bay) and optical drive I'm using all 10 SATA ports.

I'll be upgrading to 3 NVMe drives and ideally two 12TB HGST mechanical drives (with an extra 12TB and an extra NVMe for cold storage redundancy). However I recently came across the NGSFF format:

NGSFF versus M.2 NVMe SSD

It makes more sense to double the spacing. It'll take a few more years for 8TB+ SSDs (of any form factor) to come down to the $200 mark (it will happen of course).

So I am curious if there is a way to eventually replace those 12TB mechanical drives with a set of NGSFF SSD drives a few years down the road. Ideally I'd have a lock and key and could simply have an LED light or something so if a drive fails I know which one to pop out and rebuild the RAID array. With my current 5.25 to2.5+3.5 adapter I can treat hard drives like floppy disks. So...

  • Are there any 5.25 bay adapters for NGSFF?
  • What would PCI-Express cables to each drive be like? Would I need an expansion card to create cables to each drive in the front of the case?
  • I can wait a while to accept an answer; this is more theoretical right now though at some point (maybe soon, maybe later) I'm sure this will become more viable in the HEDT consumer space.

I think you will be lucky if NGSFF drives will be sold in a year let alone by the time 12 TB SSD are sold on the market. M2. replaced NGSFF. – Ramhound – 2019-09-08T23:59:59.397
