Trying to move G Suite domain to new account, getting error

Question

I am setting up a new G Suite account with domain 'example.com'. Until just now, example.com was a "domain alias" in my other G Suite account, 'example-personal.com'. I discovered you can't have it be a domain alias in one G Suite account when using it as primary for the other, which makes sense. So I deleted it from example-personal.com, and waited 30 min, but it still won't let me sign up for the new account with example.com: gives the same error:

"This domain has been registered and is in the process of ownership verification."

I'm not sure what to do next! My emails to [e-mail] are being rejected during this process so I want to solve it quickly.
