My hard drive crashed and I almost lost 2 years worth data. Backup lesson revisited!! That being said, I managed to rebuild a collection of some 15GB of data I'd like to keep safe. It took me a while and I don't want to risk losing it again!
In addition to backups, I hope to "store and forget" an archived copy of my collection which would hopefully last about 5 years. It seems optical discs (CD/DVD/Blu-ray..etc) can do the job when properly stored.
Blu-ray has enough capacity for my requirement but unfortunately, I don't have a compatible drive yet. DVDs are readily available.
The ideal solution would address the following requirements:
- archive spanning over multiple discs.
- ability to trace(or search) and extract an individual file from the relevant disc.
- encryption to protect sensitive information
- error correction against some degree of data corruption.
I don't expect a simple click of a button solution. (That'd be great though if actually possible!) I'm fairly OK with a geeky workflow involving multiple steps.
Notes:
- working environment is Windows
- I will be keeping regular backups and additional copies besides this archival project.
