Is it possible that the HP M451dw self-cleaning cycle uses toner?
Seems unlikely, but I can't account for the fact that we seem to go through a lot of toner when printing only a few pages a week, but when we have a heavy printing load, say hundreds of pages a day, we seemingly use very little toner.
Regardless of how much we print, the device is regularly going through its self-cleaning cycle.
Laser printers don't do the kind of cleaning cycles required by inkjets. Inkjets need it because the ink dries out in the head. If you're hearing a motor sound, it could be mixing the toner to redistribute it and break up any clumps due to humidity. It could just be a perception problem. Collect some rigorous data on pages printed and toner consumption. Of course, it will stop using excessive toner when you're watching it. :-) – fixer1234 – 2019-08-09T23:54:36.873
