Boot and run windows normally from External USB3.1 or Thunderbolt 3 SSD

I have got a high powered machine from work (Dell G7 15, 8850H and RTX2080). I am allowed to use it for personal use and since i like to try out new networking stuff, I would like to have an isolated OS (linux or windows) running on an external drive as the laptop only have 1 internal m.2 port. I remember trying to install windows 8 on an external drive a few years ago but failed to do so due to the port being USB 2 and not having enough speed for IO operations. However, with thunderbolt 3 and USB 3.1 to usb adapters speed is no longer a concern. I was wondering if anyone has tried installing windows on an external usb 3.1 and thunderbold drive.

1Windows running off USB 3.1 or even Thunderbolt 3 is still abysmal. There is absolutely a valid reason Windows as cease development on the Windows To Go tool. – Ramhound – 2019-06-19T17:19:34.850
