KVM: Is it possible to create several clones of an existing domain including their running snapshots without cloning the entire original disk?

Question

My goal is to use a single base VM, power it on, take a running snapshot, then create several other VMs that include the running snapshot, but all tie back to the original image. The use case is the ability to have a fleet of VMs that can be turned on without the need to boot, and also without the need to clone a 100GB qcow2 file for each clone.

I have looked at this post: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/43456433/how-to-keepimport-kvm-snapshots-after-virt-clone-a-vm but I am having trouble getting it to work while using a backing image. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
