I just changed yesterday from Mint 17 to LMDE. It's the usual round of installations and file transfers but then I arrived at this block. Video players that don't play videos, and yes, I got VLC. So I went to synaptic package manager. Where I messed around trying to find the right packages. No joy. In the end I typed in mp4 codecs and installed everything it listed. Still nothing works. Then I did a DDGO search and found superuser which had the answer ....... well it may be the answer but now I have broken packages stopping it installing. Fixed broken packages via spm but still no joy. Did a restart, still no joy, fixed them again and shut down, left it for five 5 (I needed a break) and restarted,it still has broken packages and spm is not repairing them. Any ideas will be gratefully accepted.
LMDE is based on Debian, and Debian is a stickler for open source. I don't know if Mint bundles their usual collection of proprietary stuff with LMDE. If not, you might need to add the contrib and non-free repositories. See https://www.pcworld.com/article/2949295/how-to-install-closed-drivers-media-codecs-and-other-forbidden-stuff-on-linux-pcs.html. Also, the following link is a little dated, but it should translate for Debian Stretch, which LMDE is based on: https://linuxpanda.wordpress.com/2014/03/02/things-to-do-after-installing-debian-8-jessie/.
