Why don't I get my monitor color profile over HDMI?

I recently purchased a Samsung UJ590 and noticed pretty rapidly that everything had a shockingly red tint when connected to one of my MacBook Pros.

What I found while poking around in the Display preferences, Color tab, is that when I connected the monitor via HDMI (either directly to a MacBook Pro with an HDMI port, or via a Thunderbolt-to-HDMI adapter), the Mac detected that it should use the color profile "HD 709-A", but when connected via DisplayPort, the Mac detected it should use a color profile specifically for the display (called "U32J59x").

I was able to copy the U32J59x profile from /Library/ColorSync/Profiles/Displays from the MacBook that had a DisplayPort option to the one that didn't, select it, and the colors are correct now in all cases—but I have one question I can't find the answer to:

Does HDMI not support identifying the monitor or its color profile—e.g. is that only a DisplayPort thing—or does this monitor just not indicate its color profile over HDMI?

1I suppose another possibility is that the monitor itself is advertising a different profile over HDMI than it does over DisplayPort. – Spiff – 2019-03-03T03:56:59.330
