Will SOHO router QoS fix fax over Ooma?

0

I want to use an Ooma as a fax but my router seems to be causing trouble. If I use QoS from my Netgrear router and set it to max, will this fix the analog-to-digital switching errors or will I need a special router?

1I don't know what an 'Ooma' is, but if it's a real old-fashioned fax machine it will need to be connected outside your network, to a POTS socket. – Tetsujin – 2018-09-03T16:27:47.283

google found this, which confirms my speculation - http://support.ooma.com/home/faxing-with-ooma/

OH. Yeah, right. Putting Ooma ahead of your router as instructed there means it shuts down your entire net while it's thinking about getting a connection. My suspicion is that almost nobody does this because it takes so long for Ooma to reconnect after the tiniest little blip on connectivity. – user940265 – 2018-09-03T16:49:32.280

Do you have a POTS splitter in circuit?

It's cable, not DSL. – user940265 – 2018-09-03T16:52:33.223

Then you have nothing to transmit POTS, I'm guessing. I'm afraid my last fight with a fax machine was in the early 90s, so I've no experience with anything that could be considered even analog 'cable' in relation to them, sorry. – Tetsujin – 2018-09-03T16:54:00.890

If you have POTS, a USB modem is less than US$15, and can fax while you're using cable. https://www.amazon.com/External-Voice-Modem-Windows-Vista/dp/B077YBTC2J/ref=sr_1_5

I don't have POTS. The idea is to do this digital.... IF it can be done at a reasonable price. I'm beginning to suspect it might require a special router / gateway. – user940265 – 2018-09-03T19:16:52.397

Basically, you need something that can transmit analog audio - this is all POTS used to do. DSL is simply multiplexing high frequency audio high above the frequencies of spoken word. FAX data transmission & also the dial tones use similar frequencies to spoken word - think 'high-tech morse-code' ;). So, not only do you need POTS for the data-as-audio, you also need some kind of phone line which will transmit the analog dial tones to a telephone exchange, to connect to the other party. – Tetsujin – 2018-09-04T07:09:58.403
