Windows 8.1 Clean install reboots to installation menu

0

I am trying to re-install Windows 8.1 (using a bootable DVD) and on the first reboot after having selected the unallocated drive where to install windows, I am prompted to ''Press any key to boot from CD or DVD...''.

If I do not press a key, the following message is displayed afterwards: Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in the selected Boot device and press a key.

The installation must have been successful since I can see the created partitions when going to the page where to select the location for the installation. And in the Repair your computer page, the Continue - Exit and continue to Windows 8.1 option is available.

This is what I have tried:

  • After I was asked again to boot from a CD/DVD, I restarted the computer, entered the BIOS, changed the boot order to HDD first then DVD/CD, removed the DVD, saved and exit. On reboot, the computer displayed this message: ''Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in the selected Boot device and press a key.
  • I have tried different variations on boot order versus having the DVD in the drive, without success. I am always asked to insert a media or press a key.
  • The startup repair option indicates, after completion, that it cannot repair my computer.
  • The Continue - Exit and continue to Windows 8.1 asks to ''Press any key to boot from CD or DVD...''.
  • I thought that the problem was due to the machine on which I made the first bootable DVD, however, I encountered the same error when using a bootable DVD made on a Windows 10 machine at work.

What can I do to complete the process? What am I missing?

Background

  • The computer is an Acer Desktop : Acer Aspire T3-100 with a Barracuda 1000GB Sata drive.

  • Research on the internet indicated that this might be an issue with UEFI. However, in the BIOS of my computer there is no tab/menu labelled UEFI. How can I activate/deactivate UEFI on this Acer?

  • I disabled Secure boot when I did the install, and it has been disabled all along.
  • Boot order when doing the installation was Media/DVD then HDD.
  • The Bootable DVD was created using Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool on a Vista laptop.
  • I attempted to create a bootable USB to see if the problem would replicate with the USB since the DVD seemed not to work. The process was completed but this message was displayed at the end: Files copied successfully. However, we were unable to run bootsect to make the USB device bootable. If you need assistance with bootsect, please click the "Online Help" link above for more information.
  • The bootable USB was also created using Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool on the same laptop.

This is a lot, but thanks!

Edit 1 : I tried a reinstall first of 8.1, then of 10 (partitions were deleted and new ones created for each install) ... and still the same issue.

EDIT 2 : I will attempt to make a Windows 8.1 UEFI bootable USB using a version of Rufus 2.18 (which works on Visat, the only machine that I have), and will attempt to make the installation from there again.

enable Secure Boot and update the results – Nordlys Jeger – 2018-08-01T18:34:33.367

Secure Boot is not required. Your problem has nothing to do with Secure Boot, while Windows was installed, not boot partition was created. Do you have multiple HDDs/SSDs installed by chance? Besides Windows 7 was originally installed, which means, secure boot HAD to be disabled. – Ramhound – 2018-08-01T18:43:04.247

Enabled Secure Boot and tried these two: [1]. Boot order set to HDD then DVD/Media, bootable DVD left in the drive = ''Reboot and select proper boot...''; I removed the DVD, rebooted, and got the same message. [2]. Boot order set to DVD/Media then HDD, without the DVD in the drive = same result.; I reinserted the DVD, and got this message: Press any key to boot from CD or DVD [in response to Nordlys Jeger]. – silver_arrow – 2018-08-01T18:54:06.390

(Answer to Ramhound) Windows 8 was originally installed (then upgraded to 8.1). I only have one HDD. In cmd/diskpart, I can view the partitions if Secure boot is disabled - there are four partitions (Recovery 300MB, System100MB, Reserved 128MB, Primary 930GB) under the one disk; if it is enabled, C: cannot be found in cmd. – silver_arrow – 2018-08-01T19:16:04.513

if you end up trying to reinstall win 8.1 delete all old partitions and let Windows create new ones. – Nordlys Jeger – 2018-08-01T19:36:10.223
