GPU not supported, computer won't switch to VGA

0

I'm trying to switch Linux distros on my desktop, but, as it would seem, the 'new' distro doesn't have out-of-the-box support for my (AMD) gpu. Here is a brief description of my plight:

Monitor Connected to gpu HDMI: when I boot off of a live USB, I only get as far as the menu, but if I select a live install, I get a dead black screen. Yay!

Monitor Connected to non-gpu HDMI or VGA: Dead black screen from the get go. Yay!

I simply assume that the computer is only sending display data through the gpu. Is there anything I can do about this?

(Current OS - ubuntu)

Thanks!

1With "Monitor Connected to non-GPU". Does you mean when it is connected to the on APU GPU? – Hennes – 2018-03-15T13:36:34.703

Does your CPU have integrated graphics? – Ultrasonic54321 – 2018-03-15T13:38:22.190

@Ultrasonic54321 Yes - intel integrated, – snickerbored – 2018-03-15T13:40:00.623

@Hennes do you mean to the ports on the motherboard/cpu? yes – snickerbored – 2018-03-15T13:42:05.827

Is it possible to boot up the LiveUSB on a different computer or use a different CPU/GPU? – Ultrasonic54321 – 2018-03-15T19:50:31.440

Just to clarify. 1> Monitor connected to the dedicated graphics card (powered by itsn AMD GPU) vs 2> Monitor connected to the on board graphics part (lets call it a GPU) on the combined CPU_GPU die. And if I go nitpicking VGA is a 640x480 resolution and not that blue connector. To be fair, the wrong naming is common use. – Hennes – 2018-03-15T21:52:45.463
