Circuit in car too weak for laptop?

0

My Odyssey has a 110v circuit in back for charging or low power appliances. It's max rated usage is 100W. My laptop is rated 100-240V, 1.5A. Does it really draw ~150W when the laptop is plugged in? I'd like to use this port in my car.... Thanks.

2Sounds like the case. Suspect the problem is the ampage draw more then the voltage draw honestly. – Ramhound – 2017-11-22T14:56:28.910

You could verify the actual draw with a device such as a Kill A Watt while plugged into your house. I would suspect that if the laptop were plugged in while already fully charged it would not draw the full amount. But if significantly discharged, the charger may be attempting to quick-charge the battery to fill it back to 80% or so and would use the full wattage.

The bigger question is, what happens in your car if more than 100W is being drawn? If the car is protected and only provides 100W, all will work well, the charger will just charge with lower current and the charge takes longer. If however there is not a limiter, things will overheat and break in the car at some point. – LPChip – 2017-11-22T15:55:13.223
