I have an asrock z170 pro4s motherboard and I need help with understanding where I should put the samsung 960 evo.

I will install windows 10 and ubuntu on the samsung 960 evo and boot from this device.
Which slot will give me the faster speed, putting the ssd in the M.2 slot or using a PCIe adapter and putting it in the second PCIe slot, this is a PCIe express x4 lane because my gpu is in the PCIe express x16 slot.
If I put the ssd in the PCIe slot, will it reduce the speed of my gpu?
My motherboard manual says "If the Ultra M.2 Socket is occupied by a SATA-type M.2 device, SATA3_0 and SATA3_1 will be disabled."
I shouldn't have to worry about those two being disabled because the samsung 960 evo is an NVMe M.2 device, not SATA right?
thank you, can you help me understand PCIe lanes better, I have an intel i5-6500 and an xfx r9 280x. The PCIe slot closer to the cpu (where my gpu is) is a PCIe express lane x16 and the other one is a PCIe express x4 lane. Can you help me understand how these lanes work in regards to what my cpu , pgu and possibly m.2 drives are using? – idknuttin – 2017-08-19T18:42:03.297
As specified on Intel Ark your processor has 16 PCIe Lanes. If you use your graphics card in the x16 slot, you will get full speed of this, as the Z170 chipset used by your motherboard has support to use PCIe lanes from the PCH and not the CPU for your m.2 so all is good on that front.

1Yes, sorry, edited the answer. They will only be disabled if you are using an m.2 SATA device, not an NVMe / PCIe m.2 device. Sorry for the confusion. If you use the motherboard PCIe 3.0 x4 m.2 slot, all your SATA ports will be available. – Edward Nunn – 2017-08-20T05:52:33.197
