Windows 10 user account for kid - odd behaviour

0

I'm seriously confused by the Account adminstration in my Win10 PC. I have my own account as Administrator. I have created an account for my kid and had to setup an @outlook.com account.

Seems fine, but it's not working at all.

If i'm logged in as admin and then lock the PC and sign in on the Kid account nothing happens.

I then changed the kid account from standard to admin. Then I was able to sign in.

Back again to my admin account and change the kid account to standard account. I can still login as kid but I'm not able to use the start menu. nothing happens when I click it.

If I just lock the kid screen and try to sign in to my admin account I'm told my password is incorrect. If I sign out of the kid account then I can sign into my won account.

What the heck is going on?

What I would like to achieve is to have my kid setup with his own account. He should be able to use the PC, but only work on his own files as a standard user. He should not be able to view my files nor change them.

I should be able to sign in to my account while his account is locked.

How is that done in Win10?

I pointers to a good article on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

1Your post raises so many questions we would need a chat session to figure this out. :) You don't need to create an @Outlook.com or any Microsoft account to add another user account - that is wrong and misleading by Microsoft. You can login to either user account at any time without issue - you're missing something. THe start menu not working is typical Windows 10 problems - you need to make sure you are running the most current version of Windows 10 - at least anniversary edition, or preferably Creators edition. My suggestion, delete the kid account and start over. – Appleoddity – 2017-08-12T15:13:25.580

Some information hopefully that can point you in the right direction: https://www.windowscentral.com/manage-user-accounts-windows-10

Thanks for the response. I'm using Win 10 Pro. Version 1703, OS Build 15063.540

I goto Settings > Accounts. Family & other people. Under Other people I click "Add someone else to this PC" > "I don't have this persons sign-in information" > "add a user without a microsoft account. Now I fill username and password > Next. I'm now back in Settings Family & other people and the account is listed. – Christian Steenberg – 2017-08-18T17:27:00.427

I press Win+L to lock the screen. I choose to login with the new user I just created, type password + enter. I then see Welcome .. black screen. I move the mouse and I'm back at the lock screen. I try log in again. Now I see Welcome and then very shortly after "signing out". I'm back at the lock screen.

This installation of from a plain win7 pro install that was then immediately upgraded to Win10.

Is it because Win10 does not allow for two users to be logged into one PC at the same point in time? – Christian Steenberg – 2017-08-18T17:38:01.600

Rebooted the PC. Not able to sign in one the new account. I behaves the same as on the lock screen. Signs in then out immediately. Something goes really wrong with the account creation. If I a wrong password Win saids "Wrong password" so it's not like I'm using the wrong password. – Christian Steenberg – 2017-08-18T17:49:06.450

I got it resolved. I ended up creating a new win10 USB install stick. Made a backup of my files, noted down my applications and did a complete re-install of windows. Now it work as it should. I can create the kid account and it all works fine. Something was seriously broken on with the old installation. – Christian Steenberg – 2017-08-20T15:20:58.193
