Using Audacity in Debian Jessie, I opened a full album mp3 (about 41.6 MB, 43 minutes), and I want to split it in smaller mp3 using labels. The problem is, sometimes, when I start to edit a label, it almost freezes (takes several seconds to type each character). If I press Alt+Tab to switch to and from another program, then the typed character is displayed immediately. I'm using lots of Alt+Tab to type faster! I can see it's using at least 80% of CPU, up to 96%, even when idle and not playing. (The arrow keys don't require Alt+Tab, just the input keys.)
I opened a smaller mp3 (about 6.6 MB, less than 3 minutes), and the CPU usage was about 10%. After I added a few labels, first I got a white flash on the whole screen (after added/editing only the first label!), then some characters with diacritics (like ó, á, ê) didn't work (in the second label; they were just working in the bigger file), and the CPU went back up to 92-96%. I can see the lag beginning while typing too (but fewer seconds between each letter).
Also, if I type two or three letters between each Alt+Tab, they most probably appear in the inverted order.
I could type labels without problem before, this started to happen not long ago (a few weeks or months?).
I'm using Audacity 2.0.6 (it says it's the latest version available for Debian), and I have 8 MB of RAM, so I think memory is not an issue.
Audacity used to be a great program. What's possibly going on? Is this possibly one of those viruses that only serve to slow down our tasks?

@JoshuaDrake no, only Audacity is using it. I've thought that Firefox could be consuming much of memory and CPU, but even with Firefox (and almost everything else) closed, the problem persists. – Rodrigo – 2017-06-20T21:13:17.643
