Malwarebytes will not run without updating - did manual update

Malwarebytes will not update online. It is not blocked by my firewall. I downloaded an update file and manually updated it. When I start the program it shows it's using the updated database. When I select "Scan Now" it tries to do an update, and will not move on. The only setting I see related to updates is whether to notify the user if the database is over x number of days old.
