How do I get Windows Defender notifications to return after a W8.1 reinstall?
I recently reinstalled Windows 8.1 (64). Before, Windows Defender regularly would produce pop-up notices with a "bing" stating it was taking steps to clean detected malware.
Post reinstall, Defender is no longer giving these notifications. Real-time protection is turned on. Defender is indeed on by checking in misconfig.
Q - How do I get the Defender notices to return? I prefer to have them as they are a sure sign Defender is working.

Have you actually tried testing it with a test virus? http://www.eicar.org/86-0-intended-use.html is the standard one to use.
