Will a HDD upgrade help in this case?

Need some help in the following Situation:

About my laptop:

I am currently using Sony Vaio laptop. The model is Sony Vaio Fit 14A (SVF14N16SN). You can find the technical specifications of my model at http://www.sony.co.in/support/product/SVF14N16SN in Specifications tab. The only 2 changes I have made to this is upgrading my RAM to 8 GB and Upgrading to Windows 10.

Nature of my work:

I am basically a software developer who deals mostly with Web development and minor back-end development. My work involves usage of tools like Eclipse, Visual Studio, NodeJS, Apache Tomcat, etc. Hence I have upgraded my RAM to 8 GB. The most common scenario is a browser with multiple tabs (>5) most of the time, Tomcat Server, at least 1 IDE, a few Windows Explorer windows, Microsoft Outlook, Skype, Command Prompt and NodeJS process running simultaneously.

My problem:

My computer becomes unbearably slow every now and then. In such scenarios I always go to Windows Task Manager and check the status of my resources. All other resources except my Disk drive are always fine. A sample screenshot can be found at the Google Photos link below .

My question:

My question is what can I do in such cases? I think the RAM is fine as it is generally around 85% even at my exhaustive usage. CPU as usual is rarely above 45%. The disk however is always close to 100% if not 100%. Will my problem be solved if I upgrade to a better drive like a SSD? Another issue is my HDD has some weird dimensions to I will have to replace it with something called as Slim SSD.

Thanks.

Images of my existing SSHD:

Since I do not have enough reputation to post more than one links, I am sharing the album from Google Photos. Please visit the link for the images:

NOTE: This is NOT an opinion based question. I am looking for a proper answer with technical reason as to why or why not.

What does Resource Monitor say is using the disk so heavily? – Kinnectus – 2016-09-02T07:48:49.020

@BigChris, at the this of this screenshot, it was NodeJS, but the process is different every time to be honest. Sometimes it's Kaspersky Internet Security, sometimes Apache Tomcat, sometimes eclipse, etc. – theHeman – 2016-09-02T08:14:53.557

i've read your problem, and i think that upgrade the hhd to a GOOD SSD like Samsung EVO and beyond, could be the right way to improve pc's performance and your work time. The disk usage, generally it could result from intense activity of some system processes like windows update and others. My advice is to check what are the processes that can make intensive use and turn them off if they are not indispensable for the system. Regarding Windows Update, you should turn it off and once a week, switch on to make updates, avoiding performance degradation and relative increase of disk usage.

True.. Unfortunately, the processes that are eating up disk resource are the ones I need to work :(. Also as I mentioned, I cannot upgrade to standard SSDs due to the weird dimensions of my HHDD – theHeman – 2016-09-02T08:16:45.303

What dimension do you have? bigger than 2.5 or smaller? – SystemCookie – 2016-09-02T08:26:12.793

Smaller than the normal size – theHeman – 2016-09-02T08:41:28.387

@SystemCookie, Please check the Google photos link in my post added now to get an idea of the size and the drive present in my laptop. – theHeman – 2016-10-01T14:50:14.737

Yes, you should upgrade to an SSD - this will provide a massive improvement as your system is currently very much disk bound and SSD's are at least 5 times faster - probably much more depending on your workload.

Do note that while SSD's are an order of magnitude more reliable then hard drives, when they fail they are much more likely to fail catastrophically and without warning, so make sure you have very good backups.

Also, double check, but I've done some Googling which has bolstered my suspicion that a "Thin SSD" is actually standard - while 2.5" hard drives are typically 9mm high, SSD's are most often 7mm high - ie slim - ie it is most likely you will have no problem fitting a Samsung SSD in your system (Samsung and Intel win the reliability sweepstakes for SSD's)

Hello, I had purchased a Samsung 850 EVO but it did not fit in my laptop. Hence I ended up googling it and found that SlimSSD stuff – theHeman – 2016-09-02T08:43:18.470

Correction: Sorry, I have tested with Corsair Force GT and not Samsung Evo.. So you think Samsung Evo should fit?
Corsair Force GT Dimensions: 17.8 x 12.7 x 2.5 cm
Samsung 850 Evo Dimensions: 10 x 7 x 0.7 cm
– theHeman – 2016-09-02T08:58:35.650

What monster off SSD is Corsair Force GT ?? it's nearly 3 times higher and nearly double is big as the Samsung. when the Corsair didn't fit because of 2mm you can easily fit a Samsung one. Look at this difference! Didn't know that something this big exists as SSD. – SystemCookie – 2016-09-02T09:09:09.670

According to this site http://www.corsair.com/en/force-series-gt-120gb-sata-3-6gbps-solid-state-hard-drive it isn't that big ..

What is the Corsair model? I to have been unable to find an ssd as big as your measurements.I wonder if its got a 3.5" bracket attached or maybe a different bus - but Google failed me). Any chance of a pic? – davidgo – 2016-09-02T18:42:37.503

Those were the measurements on Amazon which apparently are wrong. http://www.corsair.com/en/force-series-gt-90gb-sata-3-6gbps-solid-state-hard-drive This page shows correct measurements, however this SSD does *not* fit in my laptop.. I will try to send you a pic very soon.

You have a standard 2.5" hybrid hard drive in your system at the moment. this can definitely be replaced by a Samsung 850 EVO. That said, the Corsair drive should also fit in your system without issues - I do note that the Corsair drive comes with a 3.5" adaptor - Iwonder if this needed to be removed ? – davidgo – 2016-10-01T21:11:00.110

Just googled you Laptop. Like other said, SSD will make you PC much faster, your Speed is incredible slow.

I always prefer the Samsung SSD 850 Evo (PRO has higher BTW rate, but so high that you will NEVER reach it in the lifetime of your Laptop). It will also fit in your Laptop, you have a standard sized HDD inside it. The REAL Question is, do you need 1TB? Because 1TB is not cheap. I think the 512GB is the best deal. Is around 130€ (or dollar) ..

Hello, No normal side SSD does not fit. I know for sure because I have personally checked and tried. My laptop has a HHDD (Hybrid-HDD). And after checking the dimensions, I found out, this belongs to a very rare category of slim sata SSD. I have tried fitting normal SSD, it does not fit in the slot. It's a couple of mm too long – theHeman – 2016-09-02T08:40:40.663

Then google lied to me ... – SystemCookie – 2016-09-02T08:49:06.670

Sorry there is a correction on my part.. Check my comment on davidgo's answer.. And LOL @Google lied to me :D – theHeman – 2016-09-02T09:10:06.060
