SSHing gives me UTF-8, but using 'ssh -t' does not

1

I'm accessing my desktop machine using SSH to connect to a Screen session. If do this:

ssh -p 12345 111.11.111.111
screen -r "Jelly"

I have UTF-8 support working fine. However, if I do this:

ssh -p 12345 111.11.111.111 -t screen -r "Jelly"

Then I only have ASCII (giving me garbled text often). My locales on both machines are set as follows (according to locale):

LANG=en_NZ.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE="en_NZ.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC="en_NZ.UTF-8"
LC_TIME="en_NZ.UTF-8"
LC_COLLATE="en_NZ.UTF-8"
LC_MONETARY="en_NZ.UTF-8"
LC_MESSAGES="en_NZ.UTF-8"
LC_PAPER="en_NZ.UTF-8"
LC_NAME="en_NZ.UTF-8"
LC_ADDRESS="en_NZ.UTF-8"
LC_TELEPHONE="en_NZ.UTF-8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="en_NZ.UTF-8"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_NZ.UTF-8"
LC_ALL=

My .screenrc looks like this:

termcapinfo xterm ti@:te@
term screen-256color
defutf8 on

Is there something obvious I'm missing?

Edit: As per request, here is the '-t'd command run with -vvv:

Good philosophical question. Can you provide difference between the results of both command with -vvv switches? Maybe there will be something obvious. And what is the content of your .bashrc or other shell startup file you are using? – Jakuje – 2016-04-29T21:12:31.107

@Jakuje Added the information you requested. – Koz Ross – 2016-04-30T06:24:07.783

I meant both of the logs, also without screen as a command. There will be some difference in what exactly is going on when you are given shell or not. I suspect the rc files might not be honoured in the command case. – Jakuje – 2016-04-30T08:26:49.860
