How do I remove default windows items from the "open with" context menu?

enter image description here

The things in the image I have crossed out are the ones I want to remove. I have already tried the various NirSoft utilities, none of them will remove the default windows items.

I've also tried regedit but editing the openwithlist entries still didn't prevent the default entries from showing up in the "open with" menu.

How do I kill these things for good?

Why would you want to? Anyway, I think Windows always shows every app he knows that can open the file. – ranisalt – 2013-07-17T16:29:04.213

relevant kb but not to this version of windows

1Because I'm obsessive compulsive about reducing clutter. I never use these programs, I never want to see them. – Gabardine – 2013-07-17T17:54:45.033

To remove items from this list, locate the following registry key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.<Fileextension>\OpenWithList

Delete here the entries you don't need.

Were you not paying attention? Your solution does not work for default windows items. – Gabardine – 2013-07-17T22:34:26.463
