At the top of your screen click view then select switch to scaled view. I had the same problem and this fixed it. For some reason Kali doesn't recognize the display. Same thing happened when I installed scientific linux.

In my case the Version value in the machine's General/Basic settings was Ubuntu (32 bit)
where my image was 64 bit. I changed it to Ubuntu (64 bit)
and the problem went away.

I’ve had this happen to me in Virtual Box occasionally and it’s basically a “hiccup” of sorts. Just force quit the machine and then start it up again and all should be good. – JakeGould – 2016-12-18T05:39:13.217
