I'm all for a country protecting it's citizens from evil, but this is insane.
I'm sure Saddam Hussein wasn't this pathetic.
Seems to me that it's about time the people of the United States topple the useless government controlling them.

My god, this is an incredibly stupid post. And Saddam Hussein wasn't this pathetic? Something like this bunches your panties up that tight? I am at a complete loss for words,

Look to where the money is.
You are a US company, struggling to keep up with Chinese innovation, which is growing fast, as China has spend 10x more on it's science base in the past few years, and they now have a country run by scientists - communists, yes, but all bar one is a scientist - pulling back hundreds of foreign trained students back to home with high-paid jobs and perks like limos. What would you do?
Use the law to fight back. Take the confidential research off them at Customs, read through it, distribute it to those who need to compete, and put Team USA back at the top through underhand methods.
Of course, once the rest of the world wises up to it, they simply don't transfer data like that any more, and switch to posting half of the encrypted file through a flash card in the post, and the other half via a web server, and hide the key inside a JPG. Harder, to be sure, but if it's a business deal worth a few hundred million, what would you do?
I know of a situation where simply by bugging the fax machines in a hotel, a foreign government managed to drive the hardest bargain possible for some military equipment supply. And that was a big company and a 3rd world country. This is the USA doing the same.
