Been thinking about building a camera enclosure designed for being in close proximity to a blast or other hazardous areas where debris would pose a problem. It's for LE only right now.

So far I'm going with 1/8" polycarb glass which is supposedly "250 times" stronger than glass. I think I also have 1/4" sheet as well. I plan on building a box out of wood and then pre-drilling holes in the polycarb and wood frame for screws, then installing the glass at a 40 angle and bolting it on. I'm hoping that this will deflect debris away and over the enclosure, rather than having a flat box that it just smacks into full force. After that I guess I'll drill in and add a nut for attaching to a tripod or stationary mount.

Any ideas on the construction? So far I haven't put anything together yet.

I had an incident before where my camcorder stopped recording, but it still managed to capture the action :D

If your not worried about debris flying around, just hitting the camera why not point the camera directly away from the blast and use a couple of cheap mirrors (goodwill or garbage) to reflect the image into the camera, the blast would be recorded until the blast wave hit the mirrors and the camera would be unharmed, see poor sketch below

BOOM!

The wood takes the brunt of the explosion and the polycarbonate protects the camera from and stray debris, and cameras are more expensive than mirrors.

That's the way the pro's do it, with mirrors reflecting the image towards a protected camera, so the camera is never directly exposed to the blast or fragments. :)
