Are these full textbooks?

Jack:

Have mercy on me. :) This is already more advanced than me poor brain can handle. :o I have no idea what half the stuff in there is about. I just copy-pasted the torrent here because it looked cool and because I know there are some people here with way better maths skills than myself.

And I'm sorry I don't quite follow.... what do you mean by "are these full textbooks"? I mean, I assume the books try and do justice to the title they come with. More than that, I'm not sure. Many of them do sound text-bookish.

Downloading from that torrent is EXTREMELY SLOW!! Although it has usually about 3 seeds connected at any one time, I never get more than about 1 or 2 kb/sec out of it, and at this rate it will take two months to download. What can be done to speed it t? How about someone with a high bandwidth, who has the complete set of files, going on-line as an extra "seed"?

Corona

You are the only one with this problem it seems, specially since you are having only 3 seeds connected to you.

Right now this torrent has 117 seeds and over 400 leechers..... and it is going full blast.

Did you get it from ISO-hunt? Try getting it from where it was posted (Demonoid).... though that shouldn't effect the speed one bit.... still, you never know.

And use BitComet, for Gawd's sake.

If you are still having it slow, something's up with your ISP/cable company. Some of these guys will throttle your bandwidth (I've heard) if they notice torrent activity going on. Fortunately, BitComet can encrypt the traffic to fool them.

In addition, when you use P2P networks, you have to open certain ports on your cable/DSL modem. Otherwise the client you are running have to use other ports which may result in your slow downloading.

Many P2P clients have some sort of port diagnosis / port test features try using them. If the client reports the regular port unavailable, then you have to open the relevant port on the modem.

When I download something I am receiving about 10 kB/s for almost every torrents. So Bugger, your configuration might be to blame. Hope this helps. Regards.

It may take 2 months for you to download EVERYTHING, but if you are selective in choosing just a few of them, you can get them in a relatively short time.

That's the neat thing about a torrent, that you can select just some of the files to download, unless it's a giant .RAR or such.

Bugger:

Well, I wasn't going to download this torrent (I am not the original seeder), but just to see, I'm getting it.

My average speed is around 90-100kB/s. I will get it all in a few hours at this rate.

So, the torrent is fine.

And NBK has the obvious answer. Get what you need out of it first... no need to hurry. A torrent this big usually sticks around for a while.

People also run into problems if they are using a firewall like... what was the name of that awful thing..?.... Something-Alarm?.... I suggest one either tweaks the hell out of that made-in-Israel software... or get rid of it altogether.

A large cause of slow downloads is the firewall inside most routers. Setting the client use ports other than the default 6881-6889 (I use 40881-40889), then forwarding the ports in the router will increase download speed.

Another problem in torrents is the tcpip.sys in Windows, which limits the client to 10 connections. Patching the file with LvlLord's EventID 4226 Patcher solves this. Availible here: http://www.lvllord.de/?lang=en&url=downloads

Hey, where are you, anyway, Corona, Akinrog, and NBK2000? To get such fast Torrent downloads, you must be in a big city, with fiber-optic cable networks and T3 connections. I am NOT using ZoneAlarm, or other firewal. What ports does BitTorrent prefer to be open, anyway? And where can BitComet be obtained?
BTW There does not seem to be any way that individual files from a Torrent download consisting of several of them can be selectively downloaded, without gettring error mesages like "bad file drescriptor" or "corrupted file", and with further downloading prevented.

You can get BitComet from here:

Another very nice torrent client:

Get them both. Very easy to get files one by one using either of these two.

And Bitcomet has a hidden weapon... I'll tell you guys about it if you like.

It's an old trick which got Bitcomet banned from some places....

If your ratio sucks, all you have to do is:

1. Start download. Wait for a few minutes until you see a reasonable number of seeders connected to you.

2. Go to properties (advanced tab). You will see the name of the tracker. For example:

http://conspiracycentral.net:6969/announce

Now do this:

http://conspiracycentral.

net:6969/announce

See? You separated the tracker URL into two lines. You are in stealth mode. You are not connected to the tracker... but you ARE connected to the torrent. The tracker just can't see you anymore.

You are now invisible to the tracker. Your download will continue as normal. Sometimes, with slow torrents, you might want to rejoin the URL for a few minutes... you might catch a few more seeders.... but then go invisible again.

3. Got the whole file/movie/whatever? OK.... now press the stop button. Click off DHT network and peer exchange. Make the tracker URL normal again. Start seeding.

You ratio will go through the roof after a few torrents.

You can do the same in Azureus and I think in other clients. But Bitcomet, as it is, can be very keen to mess with the tracker anyway. For example, if you don't press the stop button, but just delete the torrent... I don't think Demonoid's tracker will add that torrent download to your ratio.

So Bitcomet has a reputation of being a tracker-bully.

And I have *excellent* ratios on all torrent sites. :) But try not to make it too good... like 10 to 1.... people will think this guy can't be for real.... and everyone knows about Bitcomet.

The client's documentation or FAQ pages contained in the relevant web site must be stating which port to open. So every client is unique, I cannot tell which port to open.

And if you are on broad band/high speed connection and your downloads are sluggish then most probably it's a configuration error.

I prefer azureus (a cross-platform i.e. java based client), which allows you to selectively download the files. If I choose "do not download".

Don't be surprised with the download speeds, since communication sector is a growing sector and with DSL/Cable, one can get incredible speeds. My top speed is about 27 kB/s.

So for an information enthiusast who collects information, a high speed connection is a must!... Regards.

I have now downloaded and tried the latest version of BitComet for several hours, and I am very disappointed at its performance. Although it seemed to be very promising for the first few minutes, connecting to many seeds and peers and showing a high download rate, it quickly became even worse than BitTornado, which I was using before. I also note that BitComet seems to be unable to check the size and correctness of previous partial downloads, and give the % of files downloaded (it always shows 0%).

Moreover, although the BitComet window apparently shows data downloading and being added to the existing partly downloaded files, an inspection of the partly completed files shows that absolutely no new data at all has been added to them for all the hours that it has been running, and the last files partly downloaded all still bear the same date and time as the last downloading using BitTornado (which I was using before). An inspection of the free space on my boot drive, and and the size of the swap file on it, strongly suggests that the downloaded data is simply being added to the RAM and virtual memory, and not being written to disk (I write Torrent downloads to a drive other than the bot drive). In the event of having to reboot or a crash, all this new data would be lost. I never had this problem with BitTorrent. The same problem has also been occurring with EDonkey and EMule for the past several weeks, which has rendered these file-sharing systems useless; they, too, report data being downloaded and added to partial downloads, but an inspection of the temporary files shows that they do not increase in size, and that the new data is added to theRAM and swap-file instead, and lost on rebooting.

I have also been unable to find out what port BitComet or uTorrent are supposed to use. BitTornado at least gives a port to use.

Corona
October 21st, 2006, 09:59 AM
You do know that you can download files one by one with BitTornado as well, yes? NBK said, get the files you most need, first. You can do that with BitTornado.

Anyway, about the problems you are describing.... I have never experienced these things you describe, but....... Are you saying that you resumed a download with BitComet that you started with BitTornado? If yes.... that probably won't work so good. When I switched over, I thought it better to start my torrents from scratch.

I never configured any ports for any of the torrent clients I have ever used... and they all worked great. BitComet chooses a port at random... go to Preferences and you can see the port it is using (what were you talking about?)

I just install the torrent client (any client) and it *works*. Azureus is the one I like least because some version of it kept crashing my computer whenever I played Risk2 (a game recommended for the nice folk we find here). Otherwise, no problems.

What are you using? DSL? Cable? Or something else? If it is DSL, the smart thing to do (some say) is to limit your upload speed to 80% of your max download speed. Only then it works great.

Point is, different kinds of broadband have different kind of quirks.

Meanwhile, you, my dear, seem to have got the short end of the stick when it came to getting decent broadband. Or your computer is getting a personality (not good, that).

It could be that your ISP is choking your traffic to deter use of P2P clients. They can recognize the type of traffic generated by most clients, and most ISP's don't like people using P2P because it cuts into their profit margin.

nbk2000

Even if the traffic is encrypted, they'll know what's going on by the constant upstream traffic. That indicates serving, as downloading something from a website or FTP generates only a fraction of the upstream traffic as the down.

With clients, the ratios are nearly equal, or at least much greater than normal for web downloads.

So, even if they can't tell exactly WHAT it is, they'll know that there is a LOT of it, and that's enough for them to choke you.

Corona
October 21st, 2006, 04:53 PM
Yes... good point.

But then what if I limit the upstream to almost nothing while I download? The tracker can't see me (described above)... I'm invisible.... so my ratio isn't getting bad. I often do this if I am seeding another torrent.... ISPs here don't care about torrent activity.

When the download is done, I get connected to the tracker again. This time, no download.... upload only. (great increase in ratio)

I don't know if this will help much, but this behaviour isn't the typical torrent activity you mentioned... the kind they are looking for.

Still:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent_protocol_encryption

"Some users report that some Canadian ISPs can block encrypted BitTorrent, but it is still effective against other ISPs."

Worth a try, I guess. You are right though... if the ISP is really determined to identify this activity, they will stop you. Which means that Bugger is.... buggered.

FUTI
October 21st, 2006, 05:25 PM
Mine ISP don't allow P2P and similar activity in basic net service. But if you pay little extra, say 50% up, you are wellcome. I did and size of my download went 8 times...it is worth every pennie I gave for it. Go and check do they have similar scheme.

Thanks for all your advice and suggestions. However, the most serious shortcoming of BitComet is that, instead of writing to the intended partly completed files in a designated folder on a drive, it instead merely adds the incoming data to RAM and virtual memory (the swap file, win386,swp). There seems to be no way to get this incoming data added to the partly completed files, instead. All this data is irretrievably lost on either closing down BitComet, or rebooting/crashing. The same thing has been happening with EDonkey and EMule for the last several weeks. Does anyone know how to prevent it, and ensure that incoming data is written to the desired partly completed files?

Corona

I don't use edonkey/emule.... what you are describing has never happened to me with BitComet, BitTornado, Azureus or UTorrent (the clients I have used).

All the torrent clients I have used have been reliable. If the computer crashes or I have a power failure or if I just shut down BitComet.. no problem. It was all written to disk and it continues from where it left off.

Yes, Kazaa... when I used to use it.... was a problem. In case of computer crashing or power failure or computer rebooting, I kept losing whatever I had got until then. The partially download file was automatically deleted. I never could figure out why.

But something like this, or your problem, has never happened to me with torrents. I never lose data. What is happening with you is not normal.

Are you running WinXp with SP2? Or have you tried Linux with torrents (Ubuntu)? Bet you won't have these problems with Linux. Just a guess.

The symptoms you are mentioning are really weird and abnormal. Are you resuming downloads remainder of previous client? The above symptoms look like this.

First of all, P2P networks use various hashing algorithms to maintain data integrity. Although these hashing algorithms are supposed to be compatible with each other, they could create some problems when switching from one client to other.

If you used a torrent client "A" before downloaded some stuff and switched to a torrent client "B" then, you may have some problems, since the clients use a hashing mechanism to determine how much of the file(s) are completed (i.e. downloaded) and request non-dowloaded parts and when getting those unloaded parts (chunks, blocks, etc.) insert or append the newly downloaded parts to the existing files.

So it's possible that partial downloads from a client be incompatible with the new client you are trying to use.

Does your client has a feature like check? For example in rare occassions, I experience a crash (mostly due to hardware failures), I have to reinstall everything and when I install azureaus again, I add my torrents which were being previously being downloaded and have azureus to check them. When I use check feature, Azureus determines how much of the file is complete and how much not and resumes the downloads successfully. Regards.
