To kick off the new FTP themed area it would be nice to have a how-to guide on starting your own FTP server. Lets make this easier, if anyone has any good tips, links, or software just put it here and I am sure someone will eventually make a guide out of it. I’m not the guy for the job since I have never made an FTP server, nor have I read how, I just thought I would get the ball rolling.

If someone has some recommendations for software I'd be able to do one myself. I set a few different servers up, FTP, HTTP, and Mail (POP / SMTP) but I haven't used any of the software in a year or so now.
What software is the FTP currently using ?

I think Serv-U is currently used for the FTP, but I can also recommend BulletProof FTP Server. Setting up an FTP server is always welcome.

I've made a manual for use with Serv-U on Windows. My web host is "experiencing technical problems" and I can't post attachments. I could put it on the FTP but then it would only be viewable to FTP members. Does someone recommend somewhere to put it or could chemwarrior make a folder on the FTP which is viewable to everyone?

Why can't you post attachments, is it too big? Just split it in 2 if it is.

Ollie, I can help out with web hosting if you need it. Email me if you can't work anything out.
I'll have a look at those servers and see what I can find out. I'll choose what I believe is the best and make the guide on that. It should be enough to get anyone started any way.
I might also do some on p2p's, sharing files, etc. I'm in the middle of creating a web design / internet based tutorial site, so other similar topics can be covered if anyone has suggestions.

The "Post Attachment" button has vanished.
I don't need a permenant web host, as I'll probably be doing my own hosting soon. I'll just keep trying with Tripod; it says the technical difficulties should be over soon every time something goes wrong.
By the way, it's for real dummies, and I mean it! It's got pictures of every button you need to press to install and register Serv-U. So when it's up, there won't be any excuse for anyone with a bit of bandwidth and some spare time not to have an FTP server. :p

Chances are you'll never get anywhere with tripod if it's images, they prevent hotlinking. Tripod is crap anyway, find another host.

Just click the "new reply" button like you always used to.
The attachment feature isn't available on the quick reply form at the bottom of the thread.
