what difference does it make when making bp if i use sodium nitrate instead of potasium nitrate and do i need to change the formula if using sodium nitrate

Sodium nitrate will make your BP very hygroscopic. You should adjust the amount of NaNO3 to supply the same amount of moles, but not critical. If you don't, you will just produce a different grade of BP (different burn rate), but with NaNO3 and all the moisture the performance will degrade rapidly.

You can easilly convert NaNo3 to Kno3, the exact procedure escapes me, if it isnt on the Forum (search), then ask on rec.pyrotechnics.
