I want to build my own remote detonator (preferred max range 5 miles) but I am unsure how to do it the best and cheapest way, maybe with a mobile phone, an AM/FM transmitter and receiver (either homemade or a modified commercial unit) or with a modified walkie-talkie.
Can you recommend a method and in which direction I should go to find further information? Maybe some links or recommended books? I wasn't able to find anything on the net or in the archive myself.
I of course will tell about any results I get.

Unlike some of the others around here, I don't go crazy at the first sign of a newbie..(actually I am still considered a newbie compared to those who have been here for years now) Everyone has to start learning somewhere, you know? (However in the rules it says to search before posting.. and some of the mods --specifically nbk-- do not take kindly to the slightest broken rule)
Anyways I believe I remember the topic on remote detonators by freshmaker.. (and I haven't been here very long.. just a few weeks as a member because for the longest time registration was disabled).. freshmaker was originally thinking of using walkie talkies for remote detonation and I had suggested RC cars (although that is just a fast way to rig up a short distance detonator); there were a few other suggestions that you may want to check out. If you want something that will reach 5 miles, something interesting to do would be to rig up a cell phone so that when you call from cell phone 'A' (your phone) to cell phone 'B' (recieving phone with a detonator rigged to the ringer), you can have a far distance detonation..
just make sure that whatever kind of jumper wires are hooked on to cell phone 'B' are long enough that when the detonation occurs, the phone will remain intact and reusable... if this idea works then you can go a hell of a lot farther than 5 miles.

The reason Why NBK and the other mods are so strict. Is that prat's like this NEVER search before they post.
If they had, then they would have found the information they were looking for and therefore a posted topic woulden't have needed being posted.
Sadly we again see why Mega needed to impose the 2week waiting trial.

You are correct in what you say RTC. I think a good adition to this forum's registration is that after the guy was supposed to have read the rules, he should have to answer a short pop-quiz over what the rules said (to make sure that the new member was well informed)
anyways just don't do it again bobcat (I am not saying this in a bad way but you live and learn)

There IS a small "pop quiz" when you sign up (at least there was when I signed up)
Asking you three questions, I belive they were:

What is the most important rule?

How are posts about your activities to be worded?

Keep all replies to a post what?

Optionally, please describe how you found The Explosives and Weapons Forum.

[/list]
Seems this user has done none but one, that was to actually find this place.

Hey, stop making me redudant by shouting at newbies! :)
I think shouting "search!" was a little unreasonable as he has said that he searched the net and the archive. He also didn't demand information, rather asked where he could find it, which is good.
There was a thread about a mobile phone/pager remote detonator but it seems to have gone walkies...

If one wanted quick and dirty, they could use the one of those FRS radios that have a (with clear line-of-sight, over water, and the stars in alingment) range of 2-5 miles. Set to sqealch and hook up a tone detector to the speaker.
Key the mic on yours to set it off.
And PRAY that there's no one around for miles who decides to talk on THEIRs at the precise moment you're hooking up the detonator. :D
But, one thing about long range R/C is the uncertainty of whether or not you're still within range to set it off.
An idea would be to have the converted walkie-talkie detonator (at the bomb) broadcast a tone every minute or so, listening for a command tone the rest of the time.
As long as you get the tone every minute on your walkie-talkie, you know you're still within range to command det.

I doubt it would be much use, but if you were super paranoid about foreign signals triggering your device at the wrong moment, you could probably hook up a second radio to activate an on/off toggle switch. This radio could be a cheap, short distance model too because it'd be alright to have it armed once your 50+ yrds away (depends on what your detonating of course  )

A $2 wind up watch would work just as well.

I'm rather happy with my detonator box.
I plan on experimenting with a shock collar that I have. It seems to receive signals fine but the shocking circuit is shot. I'll post results if it works.
