Henry Morgentaler

Dr. Henry Morgentaler was a Canadian physician and abortion-rights activist. In the 1960s, while working for the Humanist Association of Canada, Morgentaler began a campaign to allow women to have access to safe and legal abortions.

In the early 1970s, Morgentaler was tried three separate times for performing illegal abortions. While he was clearly guilty of violating the law, in all three cases, the jury found him not guilty. In response, the Quebec Court of Appeal and finally the Supreme Court of Canada overturned the jury verdicts, and Morgentaler went to jail for almost a year.

In 1988, the Supreme Court ruled in the R. vs. Morgentaler decision that laws banning abortions ran contrary to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and abortion became legal.
