Fifth column is a term coined by NationalistFile:Wikipedia's W.svg General Emilio MolaFile:Wikipedia's W.svg during the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) to designate a group within a population who are working to overthrow or disrupt the existing system - though the activity has been in existence for much longer.

Fifth column could use some help. Please research the article's assertions. Whatever is credible should be sourced, and what is not should be removed.

In some contexts the term is used against groups who are exercising cultural and other affinities with groups outside the state but who are not actually attempting to overthrow the regime. Many xenophobic conspiracy theories center around some racial, ethnic, or religious group working to undermine glorious civilization.

gollark: Maybe I should make an option to generate the image at larger sizes and downscale it.
gollark: This actually looks 3D, which is very cool.
gollark: I don't know how that "self-organizes" into a fairly pleasant image, but generally it produces several regions containing bands of color going in the same direction, meeting at the starting point.
gollark: There are some minor additional complexities in mine, such as reducing it from 16-bit to 8-bit color.
