Java Edition:Half Plant

Half Plant.gif

Normally tall plants destroy theirselves if either half is broken, though since the first tall plants were added in 13w36a (a 1.7.2 snapshot) it had been possible to obtain half versions of them.

Before 17w47a (a 1.13 snapshot) half plants would destroy theirselves after sometime, making them only temporary if loaded.

Build Limit

Placement

From 13w36a - 17w46a (a 1.13 snapshot) you could simply place any 2 tall plant just below build limit and it would place the bottom half of the plant.[1]

Growing

From 13w36a - 25w42a (present) by bone mealing grass and ferns at build height it will create a half plants.[2]

This also worked briefly with tall seagrass in 24w33a and 24w34a (1.21.2 snapshots) due to a bug where bone mealing 1 block deep water can create a tall seagrass[3]

Skull Replacement

From 1.7.6-pre2 - 1.7.10, skull replacement can be used on the top half of a plant to replace it with a skull.

Exit Portal

From 15w31a (a 1.9 snapshot) - 17w46a placing a tall plant half inside of the exit portal would destroy that half once the exit portal is reset. This works for top and bottom areas, creating top and bottom halves respectively.

Placing Tall Grass and Fern

In 17w50a (a 1.13 snapshot) attempting to place tall grass or large fern on an existing tall grass or large fern will instead create a bottom half plant.[4]

Sticky Piston

In 1.13-pre6 pulling either half of the plant with a sticky piston will remove that half.

Pitcher Plant

From when they were first added in 23w12a (a 1.20 snapshot) - 1.20 Pre-release 7 growing a pitcher pod in darkness will destroy the lower half.[5]

Note: Due to a bug in 23w12a[6] bone mealing pitcher plant will skip to the final stage, meaning in that version you must wait.

Natural Generation

Taiga

In 18w06a (a 1.13 snapshot) - 1.13-pre7 due to an issue with the new world generation, taiga biomes's ferns would instead be created as half tall grass and ferns.[7]

Fallen Trees

When fallen trees were first added in 25w09a - 25w10a (1.21.5 snapshots) they could replace the lower half of a plant.[8]
