Java Edition:Formatted Book

Minecraft Formatting.gif

Before the implementation of JSON text components, text formatting was done through a special control character, the section symbol (§, U+00A7). This system allows for different colors and effects to be applied to the text within a written book.

Obtaining

Pasting

From 12w17a (a 1.3.1 snapshot) to 1.13.2 and from 20w17a (a 1.16 snapshot) to 25w17a (a 1.21.6 snapshot), the section symbol can be inserted into books and quills by copying it to the clipboard and pasting it with Ctrl + V.[1] The character immediately following any section symbol specifies the formatting to be applied. Formatting applies to the rest of the line of text it occupies, unless another formatting code overrides it.

Formatting codes can only be inserted into the pages of the book. They cannot be inserted into the title field when signing.

Warning: April Fools'
This method requires April Fools' versions and may require the use of file modifications to load. See the tutorial for information on loading these versions.

In the April Fools' snapshot 20w14∞, end ships generated in any of the added dimensions would contain two chests, each containing a written book with a formatted author and page text.

Copies

Written books may be copied in 13w36a (a 1.7.2 snapshot) and above by crafting them with a book and quill. 14w05a (a 1.8 snapshot) added the generation tag, which increases by one each time the book is copied. The three variants that can be created are "Original", "Copy", and "Copy of a Copy". Books that are a copy of a copy cannot be copied further. All books created before this point and newly signed books will be considered original.

Formatting Codes

The text can be changed by writing formatting codes before the text. For example, §n§2Hello will display the text as Hello. Here is a list of all possible formatting codes:
