Fire as an item is available in version Beta 1.6 Test Build 3. It is a deleted discontinued feature, removed in 14w25a (1.8 snapshot). Fire can be used to craft chainmail armor by using it in the shape as any other armor in any version before its removal.

In Beta 1.6 Test Build 3, any newly generated world would contain up to 11 debug chests with every item in the game. The fire item was obtainable in the chests 2nd and 6th from the left in the 20th and 4th slots respectively, in stacks of 64.
