Introduction

If you need to replace the keyboard on your HP 15-f305dx laptop, use this guide.

The keyboard is the main way you interface with your computer. It is a crucial component in order effectively use a computer. There are several reasons why a keyboard may fail or stop working, including liquid, dust/debris, dropping the laptop, or bad hardware. All of these have the potential to cause a keyboard to fail resulting in the need for replacement.

Before using this guide, ensure your laptop’s battery has been removed so there is no chance of electric shock or further damage to your laptop.

    • Pry the keyboard out of the laptop gently and flip the keyboard around.

The bottom edge of the keyboard panel has plastic clips that keep it in place. You can use your thinnest spudger to pry the clips from underneath the laptop case/body where your palms would rest during use. If you don't press the clips while prying them, they will break! I now only have 2/6 clips remaining because this wasn't made clear (and the plastic is almost ten years old at this point so it may be brittle due to age). Something could also be said about HP preferring this laptop to be replaced as opposed to repaired -.-

    • Disconnect the connected cable from the mainboard.

This was difficult to get back in. There is no latch, so with small needle nose pliers I wiggled one side half in, then the other and back again.

There is a latch on the left side of the connector. It was colored black on the laptop I was working on. I used a spudger/black stick to lift it. Then the cable comes out and back in easily.

Thanks for this! Can confirm the latch is black and at first glance looked like part of the cable.
