How to Tape Over a Cracked Glass Panel

Introduction

Follow this guide to cover a cracked smartphone display or glass back cover with packing tape prior to making repairs. This makes the part easier to remove with a suction cup, as well as protects you from glass shards.

    • If your phone has a cracked screen or glass back cover, keep further breakage contained and prevent bodily harm during your repair by taping over the glass.

    • Lay overlapping strips of packing tape over the glass until the whole surface is covered.

    • This will keep glass shards contained and provide structural integrity when prying and lifting the glass.

    • Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from any glass shaken free during the repair.

    • If the broken glass makes it difficult to get a suction cup to stick to the surface, try folding a strong piece of tape (such as duct tape) into a handle to lift the glass.
