How to Descale a Breville Barista Pro BES878-RVC

Introduction

In this guide, I will demonstrate how to descale a Breville - Barista Pro Espresso Machine BES878-RVC.

After some uses, minerals such as limescale clog the tubes of the espresso machine, damaging it and affecting the coffee's taste. Descaling is the process of removing these built-up minerals.

Keeping up with regular descaling will extend the life of your espresso machine and produce better-tasting drinks!

Breville Espresso Cleaning Tablets, BEC250

Step 1

Press the power button to power on the espresso machine.

Step 2

Pull out and empty the water tank and drip tray.

Step 3

Pull out the water filter from the water tank.

Step 4

Pour a packet of descaler (or a descaler tablet) into the water tank.
Fill the water tank with fresh water to the descale line located on the side of the water tank.
If you do not have a descaler, pour a 1:1 mixture of white vinegar and water into the water tank instead.

Step 5

Reinsert water tank and drip tray.

Step 6

Position the steam wand above the drip tray.
If you wish to prevent splashing, place a tall bowl or cup under the steam wand.

Step 7

Press the menu button.
Turn the knob labelled “Filter Size” counterclockwise until the “descale” label is blinking on the display.

Step 8

Press down on the “Filter Size” knob to select descale.
The letter d will appear on the display and the one cup button will illuminate.

Step 9

Press the one cup button to enter descale mode.
d3 will appear on the display and water will pour from the group head.

Step 10

Wait for the display to show “d2.”
Rotate the right dial to the hot water icon to descale the hot water dispenser.

Step 11

Wait for the display to show “d1.”
Rotate the right dial to the steam icon to descale the steam wand.

Step 12

Wait for the display to show “r.”
Rotate the right dial back to the neutral position.
r means "rinse." You are now in the rinsing phase of descaling your espresso machine.
