Introduction

Follow this guide to replace the upper drive chain on a 2018 Classen Sod Cutter model HSC18AHD.

    • Make sure the engine is off and cool to the touch before you proceed.

    • Grab the plastic housing at the end of the spark plug wire.

    • Pull firmly to disconnect the wire from the spark plug.

    • Use a 1/2 inch socket to remove the three bolts securing the cutter blade on the left side of the machine.

    • You may need to use a 1/2 inch wrench in combination with the socket wrench to hold the nuts in place.

    • Use a 1/2 inch socket to remove the three bolts securing the cutter blade on the right side of the machine.

    • You may need to use a 1/2 inch wrench in combination with the socket wrench to hold the nuts in place.

    • Slide the cutter blade out from under the machine to remove it.

    • Do not handle the blade from the cutting edge.

    • Use a 1/2 inch socket to remove the 130 mm-long bolt securing the chain guard.

    • Carefully tilt the sod cutter on its side.

    • Use a 9/16 inch socket to remove the nut securing the chain guard.

    • Remove the chain guard.

    • Use a 1/2 inch socket to remove the two bolts securing the upper chain guard to the frame.

    • Remove the chain guard.

    • Use a pen to mark the location of the sprocket on the bracket.

    • During reassembly, line up the edge of the washer with the mark to get the sprocket as close to its original location as possible.

    • Use a 3/4 inch socket to loosen the bolt securing the tensioner sprocket until it can freely slide up and down the bracket.

    • Roll the machine to turn the chain until the master link is accessible.

    • Notice the open end of the master link retaining plate is facing down.

    • Use pliers to remove the master link retaining plate.

    • Install the new chain with the open end of the master link facing the same direction.

    • Do not install the new chain with the open end of the master link facing up or it could come off during operation.

    • Remove the master link.

    • The chain will fall.
