Introduction

Spark plugs often need to be replaced every 30,000 miles while some can last for longer. Over time, they become worn out, preventing your vehicle from starting properly.

Use this guide to replace the spark plugs of your Toyota Yaris 2005-2012 vehicle. Doing this replacement on your own will save you the cost of a tune-up.

For safety reasons, it is advised that you ensure the hood of the car is properly secured, your battery is disconnected, and the car is cooled down before replacing your vehicle's spark plugs. Additionally, properly handle each tool and component during this activity.

Place your car in park, engage the parking brake, and power off the ignition before you begin.

    • Too much force can cause your spark plug to crack. Unscrew it carefully to ensure no debris falls into the hole.

    • Insert a 6" extension adapter and spark plug socket wrench into the cavity where your spark plug is located. Make sure it reaches and securely grabs onto the spark plug.

    • Remove the spark plug by pulling the socket wrench towards you, and loosen it until it unscrews completely.

    • To be safer, start by using the wrench to loosen it, then remove the wrench handle and unscrew it the rest of the way with your hands.

    • Lift the wrench and the spark plug out of the cavity.

    • Make sure you tighten enough to minimize the risk of the spark plug being removed from the engine.

    • Fit your new spark plug into the socket, and insert it into the cavity.

    • Tighten the spark plug by pushing the wrench away from you, doing so until it's completely screwed in.

    • To avoid damaging the spark plug while tightening it, start by screwing in the plug with your hands, then add the wrench handle and tighten until it's secure.
