Background and Identification

A wide range of accessories are available for Apple’s iPad, ranging from cases to keyboards to smartpens. Commonly paired with the iPad, Apple’s Smart Cover is made of polyurethane and comes in a wide variety of colors. It automatically wakes the device when opened and puts the device to sleep when closed, hence the term “smart.” A close relative of the Smart Cover is Apple’s Smart Case. The only difference is an outer shell that provides added protection.

Apple also sells a Smart Keyboard, allowing users to do more with their iPads without having to buy another device. The Smart Keyboard has a built-in cover and can be set up in different configurations. In the spring of 2020, Apple released the Magic Keyboard. This pairs with the iPad Pro to deliver an experience almost analogous to that of a touch screen laptop. The main drawback is that the Magic Keyboard’s cost starts at $299, which is much higher than the Smart Keyboard’s price tag of $159.

Another notable accessory is the Apple Pencil. While the iPad keyboards allow you to turn your iPad into a laptop, the Apple Pencil allows you to turn it into a dynamic canvas. Enabling artists and avid notetakers alike, the Apple Pencil opens up the uses for an iPad. Both the 1st generation ($99) and 2nd generation ($129) models are available (as of summer 2020).
